Balloon Sinuplasty Q & A

What is balloon sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is a surgical procedure effective in clearing chronically blocked sinuses using minimally invasive techniques.

When other therapies have proved ineffective, your provider at NY Center for Ear, Nose, Throat, Sinus & Allergy may recommend this type of treatment if you suffer from chronic sinusitis, which is a recurring infection that makes it difficult to breathe.

What can I expect during a balloon sinuplasty?

If your provider recommends a balloon sinuplasty, they may perform the procedure in the convenience of the Brooklyn office and can administer a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable.

To prepare you for the sinuplasty, your surgeon places decongestants and numbing drops in your nose. The procedure involves the gentle insertion of a thin wire equipped with a tiny light into your sinus cavity to evaluate the area. A slender, flexible balloon catheter follows the wire, which your surgeon slowly inflates to decompress and open your sinuses and gently reposition the bones surrounding the sinus cavity.

If there are any fluids in the sinus cavity, your surgeon uses a sterile saline solution to flush them out before deflating and removing the balloon.

Treatment provides immediate relief, with proper ventilation and drainage quickly restored. You can enjoy improved sleep, less facial pain, and a decreased dependence on sinus medicines and antibiotics.

How much downtime is required for a balloon sinuplasty?

After the procedure is complete, you can go home to rest. Your provider gives you complete aftercare instructions to ensure your proper recovery. They likely will request that you avoid blowing your nose for 24 hours after the sinuplasty and can recommend other methods for clearing away sinus drainage.

For many people, 1-2 days of rest is necessary before you can safely return to work and your usual activities. However, you may need to discontinue strenuous activities, like exercise, for a week or longer to prevent complications.

What are the side effects of balloon sinuplasty?

In the first few days after surgery, it’s normal to have discharge from your nose that may appear bloody. You may also have some swelling and congestion in your sinuses as you heal but should notice a significant difference in sinus pressure and your ability to breathe within 4-5 days of surgery.

While complications from a balloon sinuplasty are rare, you may be at increased risk for developing a sinus infection. Your surgeon may prescribe an antibiotic as a precaution. They may also suggest over-the-counter pain relievers to keep you comfortable as you recover.
